Taiwan

Nine days on the island — Taipei, the east coast, and a great deal of rain.

I arrived in Taipei with no plan beyond a hostel booking and left nine days later having barely scratched the surface. The island is small on a map and enormous on the ground — mountains in the middle, a fast train around the edge, and rain that arrives like an appointment.

These are the photographs I kept. Most of them are of ordinary things: a street, a doorway, a cup of tea going cold. That is usually where the trip actually lives.

Neon shop signs reflected in a wet Taipei street at night.
Ximending, after the rain.
A steep marble gorge with a river running through the bottom.
Taroko Gorge, early morning.
A small tea shop lit from within, seen from across a quiet street.
A tea shop that stayed open later than it should have.
Incense smoke drifting through the doorway of a temple.
Longshan Temple.
