Japan

Three weeks moving slowly between Osaka, Kyoto and a fishing town that wasn't on the itinerary.

Japan rewarded the wrong kind of travel — the slow kind, where you get on the wrong train on purpose and end up somewhere with one café and no plan. I spent three weeks doing very little, very attentively.

The photographs here are mostly about light: the last of it in a Kyoto alley, the flat grey of a harbour at dawn, the way a train window turns a landscape into a painting.

A narrow stone alley in Kyoto lit by a single lantern.
Kyoto, just before dark.
A blurred landscape seen through the window of a moving train.
Somewhere between Osaka and the coast.
Small fishing boats resting on flat water at dawn.
A harbour town I never learned the name of.
